Turn the World Around You Into 3D Models: RealityScan App Comes to iOS Devices

A lot is being made about augmented reality and the like, including a whole segment of burgeoning technology that wants to make it easier to take real-world objects and locations and translate them into 3D objects and spaces.

Such is the inspiration behind the Epic Games RealityScan app, now available on iOS devices. Ostensibly aimed at creators and 3D modeling artists, the app takes photos and objects within them and generates a model with the exact likeness of the captured subject. Well, that’s the theory, at least, but the reviews say the current iteration of the app leaves a lot to be desired when the rubber meets the road.

That said, it’s a cool start to what is likely to become a huge time saver for everyone from digital artists to video game studios and beyond. As part of this effort, objects rendered into 3D can be uploaded to Epic’s Sketchfab and edited and/or put up for sale.

As Engadget reports, so far the app works best with simple objects in indirect light without a wet surface. The website further reports that the app seems best suited for larger objects at this point in its development cycle. Notwithstanding current deficiencies, there’s a lot of promise here and pretty much everyone seems to agree on that point. If successful, technology like this will certainly speed up the development of media using digital assets including games and movies. Engadget also speculates that things like RealityScan will be absolutely essential if the metaverse concept is ever going to take off.
