Reception marks new season at Norton and arrival of little-seen Swiss collection

It’s good to be friends of the Norton Museum. They get invited to the best parties.

Take, for instance, the celebratory reception and private viewing of its first major exhibition of the season, which took place Oct. 6 at the museum.

The evening included cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, music, and remarks from Norton director Ghislain d’Humieresand from Stefan Puttaert and Valentina Frutig from the Nicola Erni Collection.

The event’s highlight was an unhurried look at “A Personal View on High Fashion & Street Style: Photographs from the Nicola Erni Collection, 1930s to Now.”

The exhibition explores fashion and street-style photography through the eyes of Swiss collector and patroness Nicola Erni, who built one of the most important private collections of fashion photography — and her own museum to house it.

The Norton exhibit is the first time that these 50 pieces from Erni’s comprehensive collection of more than 250 photographs will be presented in a public museum.

The collection was built over 20 years and is now among the largest photography collections in private hands.

More than 100 people attended, including Norton trustees and members of the Norton Circle, the Contemporary Modern Art Council, and the Photography committee.

“A Personal View on High Fashion & Street Style” runs through Feb. 12 at the Norton Museum of Art, 1450 S. Dixie Highway in West Palm Beach.
