Ever since I was a young art student visiting museums on class field trips, I enjoyed buying postcards that depicted the work of my favorite artists. Most people cannot afford original prints of famous photographs, and who really wants to display large prints that are anything less than original? Small postcard sized prints also make the viewer lean in and look closely. Between all this and their easy storage, display and even durability, I’ve grown quite partial to printing my photographs on postcards.
For years I’ve sent clients, magazines, websites and others who’ve supported my photography, postcard thank you’s for doing so. And also for some time, I’ve sold 8×12 silver gelatin prints of my work. Usually they go to offices and other film fanatics. But honestly, most people seem to see content viewing my work on computer screens for the price that I have to charge for a good silver gelatin. Then there’s the matting and framing and real estate that images like this take up. I get it. All this makes sense.
So I was thinking, how do I sell tangible prints while keeping costs low and not forcing people to commit walls in their homes to me?
Postcards.
Simple. Small and sturdy 4×6″ postcards.
You can toss them in a drawer and flick through them when you feel like it. You can stick ’em in your refrigerator. You can pin them to a bulletin board. Clip them in your sun visor. Or, if you really want to, you’re still free to mat and frame them!
Gaze into those deep blacks without burning your eyes on your smart phone or computer monitor. Touch something made by another person and another classic camera!
For this holiday season, I’m offering a set of four all-new, never-before-printed Johnny Martyr postcards for just $30, shipped. Continental United States only please!
Two shots are from my recent trip to Paris. One is from my 1930 Leica and was featured by Kodak Professional. Lastly is a street photo I’ve been trying to capture just right for years.
I’ll sign and number them too – limited to just 15 copies. Almost like real artwork!
And I’m also tossing in one extra randomly selected postcard I’ve printed before, just for fun!
